Keeping Time 1 The early history of clock and watch trade is very obscure. Very little is known about the early clockmakers, and had it not been for the custom of marking the works of each watch with the name of its maker, our knowledge would have been still more scanty. 2 One of the earliest timekeeping devices could be found in Ancient Egypt. Early clocks were very imprecise, and one had to adjust them frequently, using sundials and position of the sun. Later in the Middle Ages, the mechanical clock was one of the most important inventions made in Western Europe. In large cities, very big mechanical clocks could be seen in clock towers. Then, the advancement of clock-making took a huge leap when the pendulum clock was invented. The pendulum clock had adequate precision for everyday life. 3 At the turn of the nineteenth century, Concord was a prosperous area, already famous throughout the young nation for its clock making. It was a town that attracted over five hundred visitors twice a year, many of them were customers for Concord s hats, shoes, carriages and clocks. Among Concord s approximately four hundred heads of households in this period, about sixty-five percent were in agriculture, four percent in commerce, and thirty-five percent in manufacturing. Of those in manufacturing, seven men headed clock making shops, and another thirty were engaged in the shops or in businesses that supplied the clock making trade. In short, the center of Concord, the Milldam, was a machine for the production of clocks, second in importance to Boston s industrial Roxbury Neck, where the influential Willard family had been producing clocks since about The well-crafted clocks of these seven shops, featuring reverse painted glass, were generally perceived as products of a traditional clockmaker. Yet, they were actually products of a network of shops employing journeymen labor that extended from Concord to Boston and overseas to the highly developed tool trade of England. 5 In addition to crafting in the fashionable Willard features, such as the pierced decoration, Concord clockmakers attempted to differentiate their products from those of the Willard s through the use of distinctive ornamental inlay 1. This added to the perception of custom work not usually seen on the Willard s standardized products. The Willard s also made less expensive wall clocks. Later, Concord clockmakers wanted to win the Willard s. They used distinctive diamond shaped design and inverted movement of some Concord wall clocks which helped in beating the Willard s. 1 inlay: material set into the surface of something for decoration 1

A craft is a profession that requires particular skills and knowledge to produce a piece of work. Unlike items produced cheaply and quickly, handicrafts (e.g. a hand-made carpet or scarf) represent the culture and traditions of any country. Handicrafts are ways to preserve the rich heritage of arts, skills and talents which are associated with people s history, and they provide an opportunity for making money. Make an outline and then write an essay in which you explain the above statement. As you develop your essay, explain why it is important to preserve traditional crafts, and what can be done to keep such crafts in existence. In your essay, provide a thesis statement in the introduction, a topic sentence in each body paragraph and support the main idea with relevant, specific and adequate details. Give examples drawn from your reading, experience or observation. Your essay should be between words with an appropriate title. Revise and proofread your essay. Prompt (B): Read the following statement from an essay on arts. Despite living in an increasingly digital world, there are old things we should keep as reminders of arts, feelings and experiences. Thus, visiting an exhibition of handicrafts can be an inspiring experience. Based on the statement above, write a narrative essay about a trip you once planned for with your friends to visit a museum of handicrafts. As you develop your essay, describe how you planned for the exhibition visit, who was involved, how you were inspired and what lesson you learned from this experience. Copy and fill in the chart below and then write the essay. Your essay should be between words with an appropriate title. Revise and proofread your essay. 3
